We are looking for new team members to join our volunteer staff. These are unpaid roles, and as such are dependent on your own capacity. We strongly suggest those who are looking to build their journalistic network, develop editor skills, and learn how to run a publication apply.

Music Editor
The Music Editor runs our music section and is a part of Kajal Magazine‘s editorial staff. It’s a fairly autonomous role without micro-managing.
The job requires
- At least one new post a month, either written by you or by a contributor you work with
- Biweekly check-ins with the team via Slack
- Inbox maintenance for contributors pitching and/or PR requests
- A strong vision for the section
- Working with the Editor-in-Chief to determine the editorial calendar
Qualifications
- An interest in South Asian storytelling and journalism related to music
- Some reporting/editing experience, either through school or as a contributor elsewhere online

If you move forward, you will be asked to pitch 3-5 stories and publish 2-3 of them on the site to learn how the magazine runs.
Art Editor

Essays Editor
The Essays Editor runs our essays section and is a part of Kajal Magazine‘s editorial staff. You will work closely with the Editor-in-Chief to ensure published pieces reflect the Kajal voice.
The job requires
- At least one new post every two months from a contributor
- Biweekly check-ins with the team via Slack
- Inbox maintenance for contributors pitching
- A strong vision for the section
- Working with the Editor-in-Chief to determine the editorial calendar
Qualifications
- An interest in South Asian storytelling and creative nonfiction
- Some reporting/editing experience, either through school or as a contributor elsewhere online
