“From Japan to Jamaica to the Philippines, every culture has its own take on a dish I grew up eating with my Punjabi family,” rapper Jasleen Powar, a.k.a. Horsepowar, says over a montage of New York City scenes. “We’re here, we’re hungry, and we’re eating our way through the five boroughs.”
The web series, which features guests like Aasif Mandvi, Sean Paul, Chi Ching Ching, and Rina Sawayama, is expansive in its goal: to find the connection between music, food, and community. Despite the loftiness of its mandate, it’s quick to get jump into the nitty-gritty of what makes each of those things fundamental to our lives.
“Each guest has brought a different type of energy to the show and I think that this show will have something for everything,” Powar told Kajal. “We have fun, we joke, laugh, talk about social constructs, childhood memories and the beauty of nourishing ourselves. Food is a window into the many stories we all live, so I’m glad we’re highlighting the food that I am familiar with on a platform where I don’t see that type of inclusivity.”
