Alpha female of the world.

British band Wild Beasts released their music video for “Alpha Female” off their new album Boy King today. Dazed spoke to director Sasha Rainbow about how she filmed the skater girls of Bangalore for the song.

“In places like Afghanistan, Cambodia, and India, skating has not been solidified as a male sport and therefore has had a massive cultural impact, teaching values about self-empowerment through skateboarding,” she told Dazed.

“Because of the current political climate in the west and attitudes of intolerance and sexism across the world, I wanted to create a video that celebrates everyone who takes the risk to be themselves.”

Rainbow followed pro skater Atita Verghese, the first of her kind in India, as well as skate collectives Girl Skate India and the Holystoked Skate Crew as she shot the music video.

As Homegrown reports, India is the middle of a skating boom as young people take up the sport in both urban and rural spaces. In one recent case, a skate park in the state of Madhya Pradesh was awarded money by the local government for its impact on the community.
